When a father or mother tells the children that he or she is going to the office, this usually means an open plan office where Mum or Dad has a space amongst many colleagues in a large room. Interior decorating and furnishings has created a set of work spaces within the large room. An office is no longer a closed compartment where one works in isolation, separated from colleagues. Working in a shared space is not a recent innovation. Workers who engaged in repetitive work were usually accommodated in a general location with a more senior employee to supervise operations. Since the middle of the last century, numerous ideas have been put forward about how a communal area can be best utilized to accommodate everyone who works in an office environment, whether in a routine job or in a highly creative job.

It creates the space workers need to complete their tasks and to store their documents and equipment.
