There are many different flooring materials available today including one of the most beautiful and environmentally friendly, a bamboo floor. No, this isn’t taking round bamboo stalks and lashing them together to make a floor for your home. Bamboo flooring in one of the most durable and unique flooring materials you can get for your home today.

Many hardwood floors feature a nice grain and wood look that is very pretty especially in the various colors and patterns. Bamboo flooring however features a much more subtle graining pattern and because of the way it’s manufactured, features more of a pronounced ring like pattern. So you have a grain that suggests a direction and every so often a uniquely bamboo ring pattern. Bamboo can also be stained and finished just like regular hardwood flooring.

Bamboo is actually a grass like plant that grows quickly and is usually considered an aggressive plant. Utilizing Do It Your Self Sash Window Draught Proofing Methods

Sometimes heating costs can get out of hand in older homes. These are the homes that still have sash windows in which the seals have become hard and no longer effective. One can sit next to one of these windows and literally feel a breeze. By using do it your self sash window draught proofing it is easy to see results in the first month of utility bill.

In case sash windows are unfamiliar to some, they are wooden framed single or multi-paned windows. Each pane of glass is separated by strips of wood with putty around each pane. The putty tends to become hard and brittle causing it to allow breezes to emanate from the windows. This becomes very costly when the heating bill arrives.

Putty can be replaced to create a new seal between the window and the wood. Use a putty knife to scrape away cracking and broken putty to reveal a clean pane of glass. Then use the same knife to apply new putty in its place. Allow it to set and then paint to match the framing around each window.  Read more...

Environmental Concern Is Always In Style, As Is Denim

Years ago environmentalists complained thatstonewashed jeans, incurred a heavy environmental price for that amazing distressed look. In the production process of manipulating fabrics to attain that distressed look and feel, manufacturers were going to great lengths to keep up with the industry, even if it required compensating with an environmental impact.

There have been reports of environmental poisoning of toxic run-off from factories that used to distress and help produce stonewashed jeans. This run-off was more often than not laden in blue dye and chemicals such as sulfur, caustic soda and hydrocyanic acid. Large quantities of potassium permanganate were also found, a chemical once used to induce abortion was being found in the local water supply!

Tree huggers try and claim that using the technique to soften jeans to give it a washed look takes 5 gallons of water and the amount of energy it takes to power a home for a day. But this old school method is no longer employed.  Read more...

Solar Power Systems, Profitable And Practical?

Solar power systems are a hot item today because of all the talk about green energy and because of the ongoing political debate about foreign oil dependence. However, solar energy is not a simple issue scientifically. If it was simple, the sun would be providing energy to power our homes and our communities.

It is an easy concept, using the rays of the sun to produce electricity, but the practical method of harnessing the sun’s energy and converting into usable power is still more complicated than the traditional electrical turbine based energy grid system.

It seems simple enough. After all the sun provides the energy for all life on earth. Why not tap into that power to watch TV?

Some have built solar power grids for their house to power their TV, and their coffee maker, their microwave oven, and even the lights in their home.

Their system has solar panels on their roofs that collect sun rays that heat copper tubing which produces electrical energy that is converted into electrical current and channeled through twelve volt batteries and condensers which then provide power.  Read more...

And so they translate it into Greek where it sounds sophisticated (even when it just isn’t). There is much talk of ecological crisis. It is said that most of these are man made. The ecological crisis that is being talked about consists of a vast array of problems. There are the oil spills that devastate vast areas in the sea and the coast line. The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 off the coast of Alaska is one such. Global warming, a result of the emission of green house gases because of human activities could flood many islands that dot the Pacific Ocean. The depletion of ozone layer will increase the radiation from the sun reaching the earth. Many species will disappear as a result of deforestation as well as desertification. Large plain areas will be threatened with devastating floods due to the vanishing forests up in the hills. It is estimated that some 17,000 to as many as 100,000 species vanish every year. Over the last five decades, seven million square kilometers of forests have vanished. Only one-fifth of the original forests survive intact.  Read more...
